Alfred Chester Beatty

Alfred Chester Beatty, born on February seventh, eighteen seventy-five, was a prominent American mining magnate and philanthropist, renowned for his significant contributions to the arts and culture. His successful ventures in the mining industry earned him the title of the 'King of Copper,' a testament to his immense fortune and influence. In nineteen thirty-three, he became a naturalised British subject, further solidifying his legacy in the United Kingdom.

Beatty's passion for collecting was evident in his extensive array of African, Asian, European, and Middle Eastern manuscripts, rare printed books, and exquisite prints. After relocating to Dublin in nineteen fifty, he established the Chester Beatty Library on Shrewsbury Road, which opened its doors to the public in nineteen fifty-four. This library was not just a personal endeavor; it was a gift to the Irish people, as he bequeathed his remarkable collections to the state in his Irish will.

His philanthropic spirit extended beyond his library. Beatty donated several papyrus documents to the British Museum and gifted his second wife's collection of Marie Antoinette's personal furniture to the Louvre. Additionally, he contributed a number of his personal paintings, once displayed in his London home, to the National Gallery of Ireland. His commitment to healthcare was also notable, as he facilitated the expansion and relocation of the Cancer Research Institute, which was renamed the Chester Beatty Institute in nineteen thirty-nine.
