Berke

Berke, born in the year twelve hundred and nine, emerged as a formidable Mongol military commander and the esteemed ruler of the Golden Horde, a significant division of the vast Mongol Empire. His reign from the year twelve hundred fifty-seven to twelve hundred sixty-six marked a pivotal era where he successfully unified the powers of the Blue Horde and the White Horde, solidifying his influence across the region.

As a grandson of the legendary Genghis Khan through his son Jochi, Berke inherited a legacy of leadership and military prowess. He succeeded his brother, Batu Khan, who led the Blue Horde in the West. Notably, Berke played a crucial role in the introduction of Islam within the khanate, establishing it as a significant religious presence in the Mongol Empire.

In the wake of the devastating Sack of Baghdad orchestrated by his cousin Hulagu Khan, who governed the Mongol Ilkhanate in Persia, Berke forged an alliance with the Egyptian Mamluks. This strategic partnership was aimed at countering Hulagu's advances. Additionally, during the Toluid Civil War, Berke supported Ariq Böke against Kublai Khan, although he refrained from direct military involvement due to his ongoing conflict with Hulagu and the Ilkhanate.
