George I of Great Britain

George I of Great Britain, born on June seventh, sixteen sixty, was a significant political figure who reigned as King of Great Britain and Ireland from August first, seventeen fourteen, until his death in seventeen twenty-seven. He also ruled the Electorate of Hanover within the Holy Roman Empire from January twenty-third, sixteen ninety-eight. As the first British monarch of the House of Hanover, George's legacy is intertwined with the evolution of the British monarchy.

Born in Hanover to Ernest Augustus and Sophia of Hanover, George inherited the titles and lands of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg from his father and uncles. In sixteen eighty-two, he married his cousin, Sophia Dorothea of Celle, with whom he had two children. However, their marriage ended in divorce in sixteen ninety-four. Additionally, George fathered three daughters with his mistress, Melusine von der Schulenburg.

Throughout his reign, George I witnessed the expansion of his German domains due to a series of European wars. He was ratified as prince-elector of Hanover in seventeen oh-eight. As the senior Protestant descendant of his great-grandfather, James VI and I, George ascended to the British throne following the deaths of his mother, Sophia, and his second cousin, Anne, Queen of Great Britain, in seventeen fourteen.

During his time on the throne, the powers of the monarchy began to wane, marking a transition towards a modern cabinet government led by a prime minister. Despite attempts by Jacobites to dethrone him in favor of James Francis Edward Stuart, Anne's Catholic half-brother, George maintained his position. By the end of his reign, actual political power was largely held by Robert Walpole, recognized as Britain's first de facto prime minister.

George I passed away in seventeen twenty-seven while journeying to his native Hanover, where he was subsequently buried. Notably, he remains the most recent British monarch to be interred outside the United Kingdom.
