Gerd von Rundstedt

Gerd von Rundstedt, born on December twelfth, eighteen seventy-five, was a prominent German Generalfeldmarschall in the Heer of Nazi Germany. With a military career spanning over fifty-two years, he became the Army's most senior officer by the end of World War II, at the age of sixty-nine.

Hailing from a Prussian family steeped in military tradition, Rundstedt began his service in the Prussian Army in eighteen ninety-two. His early career saw him primarily in staff roles during World War I, and he continued to rise through the ranks during the interwar period, achieving the rank of Generaloberst before his retirement in nineteen thirty-eight.

Recalled at the onset of World War II, Rundstedt commanded Army Group South during the invasion of Poland and later led Army Group A in the Battle of France. Notably, he requested the Halt Order during the Battle of Dunkirk and was promoted to Field Marshal in nineteen forty. His leadership during the invasion of the Soviet Union included overseeing the historic encirclement at the Battle of Kiev.

Despite his military prowess, Rundstedt faced challenges, being relieved of command in December nineteen forty-one after a controversial withdrawal from Rostov. However, he was reinstated in nineteen forty-two as Commander-in-Chief in the West. His tenure was marked by the German defeat in Normandy, leading to his dismissal in July nineteen forty-four, though he was recalled again in September of the same year, serving until his final dismissal by Adolf Hitler in March nineteen forty-five.

Post-war, Rundstedt was charged with war crimes but did not stand trial due to his age and declining health. He was released in nineteen forty-nine and passed away in nineteen fifty-three.
