Born on the twenty-eighth of August in the year eighteen hundred twenty-seven, Grand Duchess Catherine Mikhailovna of Russia was the third of five daughters born to Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich, the youngest son of Emperor Paul I, and Princess Charlotte of Württemberg, who became known as Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna after her marriage.
