Henry IV of England

Henry IV, born around April 1367 at Bolingbroke Castle, was a pivotal figure in English history, reigning as King of England from 1399 until his death in 1413. He was the son of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, and a grandson of King Edward III. His ascent to the throne was marked by significant political turmoil, including his involvement in the 1388 revolt against his cousin, King Richard II.

After a period of exile in 1397, Henry's fortunes changed dramatically following the death of his father in 1399. Richard II's refusal to allow Henry to inherit the Lancaster holdings led him to rally his supporters, ultimately resulting in the imprisonment and deposition of Richard. This act of usurpation not only secured Henry's claim to the throne but also set the stage for future dynastic conflicts, notably the Wars of the Roses.

As the first English monarch since the Norman Conquest to speak English as his mother tongue, Henry IV represented a significant cultural shift in England. His reign was not without challenges; he faced numerous rebellions, including those led by Owain Glyndŵr and the infamous Henry Percy, known as Hotspur, who met his end at the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403.

Henry IV's personal life was marked by two marriages. His first wife, Mary de Bohun, bore him six children, while his second marriage to Joan of Navarre did not produce any surviving heirs. As his health declined in 1410, his eldest son, Henry of Monmouth, began to take on more responsibilities, eventually succeeding him as Henry V upon his death in 1413.
