Konstantinos Mitsotakis

Konstantinos Mitsotakis, born on October eighteenth, nineteen eighteen, in Chania, Crete, emerged as a significant figure in Greek politics. Coming from a politically influential family linked to Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos, he graduated in law and economics from the University of Athens. His political journey began in nineteen forty-six as a member of the Liberal Party, and he quickly ascended through various ministerial roles during the nineteen fifties and sixties.

In nineteen sixty-one, Mitsotakis joined the Center Union party and was seen as a potential leader by nineteen sixty-five. However, his controversial decision to oppose Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou during the Iouliana of nineteen sixty-five marked a turning point in his career. Following the fall of the Greek junta in nineteen seventy-four, he sought to restore his political standing and joined New Democracy in nineteen seventy-eight, eventually becoming its leader in nineteen eighty-four.

As Prime Minister from nineteen ninety to nineteen ninety-three, Mitsotakis implemented an austerity program aimed at economic liberalization and privatization, striving to align Greece with Euro convergence criteria. His administration also focused on improving international relations, notably with the United States, and ratified the Maastricht Treaty. However, his tenure faced challenges, including political instability and internal conflicts, particularly regarding the Macedonia naming dispute, which led to significant party strife.

After resigning from the presidency of New Democracy in November nineteen ninety-three, Mitsotakis remained a prominent figure in Greek public life for nearly six decades. He passed away in two thousand seventeen at the age of ninety-eight. His legacy continues through his son, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who became Prime Minister of Greece in two thousand nineteen.
