Kyriakos Mitsotakis, born on March 4, 1968, is a prominent Greek politician and financier, currently serving as the Prime Minister of Greece since July 2019, with a brief interruption in June 2023. He has been the president of the New Democracy party since 2016, representing a centre-right political stance and advocating for economically liberal policies.
Mitsotakis first entered the Hellenic Parliament in 2004, representing the Athens B constituency. He held the position of Minister of Administrative Reform from 2013 to 2015 and served as the Leader of the Official Opposition from 2016 to 2019. After leading his party to a majority in the 2019 Greek legislative election, he became Prime Minister, a role in which he has faced both acclaim and criticism.
His tenure has been marked by significant events, including the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, the modernization of public administration, and economic reforms that earned Greece recognition as the Top Economic Performer for 2022. Mitsotakis has also been involved in controversial issues such as the legalization of same-sex adoption and marriage, as well as migration policies that have drawn mixed reactions.
Despite his achievements, Mitsotakis's government has faced scrutiny over corruption, press freedom, and various crises, including the 2022 wiretapping scandal and the Tempi train crash. In 2024, he received criticism from the European Parliament regarding the state of the rule of law in Greece, highlighting the complexities of his leadership.
