Marie Dressler

Leila Marie Koerber, known to the world as Marie Dressler, was born on November 9, 1868, in Canada. She embarked on her artistic journey at the tender age of fourteen, leaving home to join traveling theatre troupes. This early experience honed her comedic talents, setting the stage for a vibrant career that would span decades.

In 1892, Dressler made her Broadway debut, captivating audiences with her improvisational skills and comedic timing. Her stage career flourished well into the 1920s, where she became a beloved figure in New York City’s theatre scene. During World War I, she demonstrated her patriotism by participating in efforts to sell Liberty bonds, showcasing her commitment to her country.

Transitioning to the silver screen, Dressler made her mark in 1914 with the groundbreaking film 'Tillie's Punctured Romance,' where she starred alongside legends Charlie Chaplin and Mabel Normand. Despite facing a decline in her career during the 1920s, which forced her to live modestly, her resilience shone through.

At the age of fifty-nine, Dressler made a triumphant return to film, achieving remarkable success in her later years. Her performance in the comedy 'Min and Bill' in 1930 earned her the prestigious Academy Award for Best Actress, solidifying her legacy in Hollywood. Sadly, her life was cut short when she passed away from cancer on July 28, 1934.
