Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Mark Kelly

Mark Kelly, born on February twenty-first, nineteen sixty-four, is a distinguished American politician, retired astronaut, and naval officer. Currently serving as the senior United States senator from Arizona, he has held this position since 2020 as a member of the Democratic Party. His journey into public service follows a remarkable career in the military and space exploration.

Before entering the political arena, Kelly flew combat missions during the Gulf War as a naval aviator. His selection as a NASA Space Shuttle pilot in nineteen ninety-six marked the beginning of an illustrious career in space. He flew his first mission, STS-108, in two thousand one, and went on to pilot STS-121 in two thousand six. He commanded STS-124 in two thousand eight and STS-134, the final mission of Space Shuttle Endeavour, in two thousand eleven.

In January two thousand eleven, Kelly faced a personal tragedy when his wife, then-Arizona Representative Gabby Giffords, was shot in an assassination attempt. This event profoundly impacted his life and led to his retirement from both the Navy and NASA later that year. Together with Giffords, he founded a nonprofit political action committee, Americans for Responsible Solutions, advocating for gun control measures, including universal background checks.

Kelly's political career began in earnest when he was elected to the Senate in a special election in 2020, following the death of Senator John McCain. He triumphed over incumbent Republican Martha McSally, becoming the first Democrat to win the seat since nineteen sixty-two. His commitment to public service was reaffirmed when he was reelected to a full term in 2022. As of now, he is considered one of the leading contenders for the Democratic vice presidential nomination in the upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential election.
