Martin Chemnitz

Martin Chemnitz, born on November ninth, fifteen twenty-two, was a prominent figure in the second generation of the German Evangelical Lutheran movement. Renowned as a theologian, university teacher, and writer, he played a pivotal role in shaping Protestant reform and confessional thought during a transformative period in Christian history.

Often referred to as Alter Martinus, or the 'Second Martin,' Chemnitz earned this title due to his significant contributions to the Lutheran tradition. A well-known saying encapsulates his impact: 'If Martin [Chemnitz] had not come along, Martin [Luther] would hardly have survived.' This highlights the essential role he played in supporting and advancing the Reformation.

In addition to his theological pursuits, Chemnitz was also an astrologer and librarian, showcasing his diverse interests and intellectual capabilities. His legacy is honored in the Calendar of Saints and Commemorations within the Liturgical Church Year, where he is recognized as a pastor and confessor by both the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod.
