Selim II

Selim II, often referred to as Selim the Drunkard, was born on May thirtieth, fifteen twenty-four, and ascended to the throne as the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in fifteen sixty-six. He was the son of the illustrious Suleiman the Magnificent and his beloved wife, Hürrem Sultan. His reign lasted until his death in fifteen seventy-four, marking a significant period in Ottoman history.

During Selim's rule, the empire witnessed notable military achievements, including the successful conquests of Cyprus and Tunis. However, his reign was not without challenges. The Battle of Lepanto proved to be a significant setback, and the failed attempt to capture Astrakhan during the conflict with Russia highlighted the complexities of governance during his time.

One of the defining features of Selim II's reign was the substantial influence exerted by his grand vizier, Sokollu Mehmed Pasha. This partnership shaped the political landscape of the empire, as Sokollu Mehmed Pasha played a crucial role in state governance, steering the empire through both triumphs and tribulations.
