Sirajuddin Haqqani, born in December nineteen seventy-nine, is a prominent Afghan military leader and politician. He currently serves as the first deputy leader of Afghanistan and the interior minister in the post-2021 Taliban regime. His ascent within the Taliban began in two thousand fifteen when he became a deputy leader, and he was appointed to his ministerial role following the withdrawal of foreign troops in two thousand twenty-one.
Haqqani has been at the helm of the Haqqani network, a semi-autonomous paramilitary faction of the Taliban, since inheriting leadership from his father in two thousand eighteen. His primary focus has been on military operations, overseeing armed combat against American and coalition forces, often coordinating from a base in North Waziristan District, Pakistan.
As the interior minister, he wields significant influence over Afghanistan's internal security forces, shaping the country's approach to law enforcement and public safety. His past is marked by controversy; he was once a wanted individual by the FBI for his involvement in the two thousand eight Kabul Serena Hotel attack, which resulted in the deaths of six people, including an American citizen. The U.S. State Department has designated him a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, offering a reward of ten million dollars for information leading to his arrest.
