Jalaluddin Haqqani

Jalaluddin Haqqani, born in nineteen thirty-nine, was a prominent Afghan military leader and the founder of the Haqqani network, an insurgent group known for its guerrilla warfare tactics against US-led NATO forces and the former Islamic Republic of Afghanistan government. His military career began to gain international attention during the Soviet–Afghan War in the 1980s, where he distinguished himself as a formidable insurgent commander.

During this conflict, Haqqani earned significant recognition, receiving praise from U.S. officials who referred to him as 'goodness personified.' His strategic importance was underscored by his status as a prized asset of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), with former U.S. President Ronald Reagan labeling him a 'freedom fighter.' His involvement in key operations, including Operation Magistral, solidified his reputation as a leading figure in the Afghan resistance.

By two thousand four, Haqqani had shifted his focus to directing a pro-Taliban insurgent group, advocating for a holy war in Afghanistan. Despite his notoriety, U.S. Lieutenant General John W. Nicholson Jr. noted in two thousand sixteen that the U.S. and NATO forces were not actively targeting Haqqani's network, indicating a complex relationship between the insurgent leader and international military efforts.

In late July two thousand fifteen, media reports surfaced claiming that Haqqani had passed away the previous year in Afghanistan, with his burial taking place in Khost Province. However, these reports were met with denial from the Taliban and some members of the Haqqani family. Ultimately, on three September two thousand eighteen, the Taliban confirmed his death after a prolonged illness, marking the end of a significant chapter in Afghanistan's tumultuous history.
