Steve Beshear

Steve Beshear, born on September twenty-first, nineteen forty-four, is a distinguished American attorney and politician known for his impactful contributions to Kentucky's political landscape. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the sixty-first governor of Kentucky from two thousand seven to two thousand fifteen, following a notable career in various political roles.

Beshear's political journey began after graduating from the University of Kentucky College of Law in nineteen sixty-eight. He briefly practiced law in New York before returning to Kentucky, where he was elected to the state legislature from nineteen seventy-four to nineteen eighty. His reputation as a consumer advocate paved the way for his election as the state's forty-fourth attorney general from nineteen eighty to nineteen eighty-three, during which he made headlines by advocating for the removal of the Ten Commandments from public school classrooms.

In nineteen eighty-three, Beshear became the forty-ninth lieutenant governor under Governor Martha Layne Collins, where he initiated the Kentucky Tomorrow Commission to strategize for the state's future. However, his rise was temporarily halted in nineteen eighty-seven when he finished third in a gubernatorial primary election, leading to a two-decade hiatus from political office during which he practiced law in Lexington.

In two thousand seven, Beshear returned to politics, capitalizing on the vulnerabilities of the incumbent Republican Governor Ernie Fletcher. He won the gubernatorial election, largely due to his promise to expand casino gambling to fund social programs. His successful tenure was marked by his reelection in two thousand eleven, after which he was succeeded by Republican Matt Bevin in two thousand fifteen due to term limits. Notably, Bevin lost the subsequent election in two thousand nineteen to Beshear's son, Andy.
