Tony Lazzeri

Tony Lazzeri, born on December sixth, nineteen oh three, was a prominent American professional baseball second baseman who made his mark during the roaring twenties and thirties. He is best remembered for his time with the New York Yankees, where he became a key player in the legendary 'Murderers' Row' batting lineup, sharing the field with baseball icons such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Bob Meusel.

Raised in San Francisco, California, Lazzeri's journey to baseball stardom began when he dropped out of school to work alongside his father as a boilermaker. However, his passion for the game led him to pursue a professional baseball career at the age of eighteen. After honing his skills in the minor leagues from nineteen twenty-two to nineteen twenty-five, he joined the Yankees in nineteen twenty-six, quickly establishing himself as a formidable player.

In nineteen thirty-three, Lazzeri was honored as a member of the inaugural American League All-Star team. His nickname, 'Poosh 'Em Up,' was affectionately given by Italian-speaking fans, stemming from a mistranslation of an Italian phrase meaning to 'hit it out.' Throughout his career, he achieved remarkable feats, including being one of only fourteen major league players to hit for the natural cycle, and notably, the only player to do so with a grand slam.

On May twenty-four, nineteen thirty-six, Lazzeri set the American League record for the most runs batted in during a single game, with eleven RBIs. In that same game, he made history as the first major league player to hit two grand slams in one game. His contributions to the sport were recognized posthumously when he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in nineteen ninety-one.
