Vasily I of Moscow

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Vasily I of Moscow

Vasily I of Moscow, born on December thirtieth, thirteen seventy-one, ascended to the throne as Grand Prince of Vladimir and Moscow in the year thirteen eighty-nine. He was the direct heir of the notable Dmitry Donskoy, who had reigned from thirteen fifty-nine until his death in thirteen eighty-nine.

In a strategic move to strengthen his position, Vasily entered into an alliance with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in thirteen ninety-two. This alliance was further solidified through his marriage to Sophia, the only daughter of Vytautas. However, the partnership proved to be tenuous, leading to hostilities between the two powers from fourteen oh six to fourteen oh eight.

The political landscape during Vasily's reign was tumultuous, particularly following the devastating raid on the Volga region in thirteen ninety-five by the Turco-Mongol emir Timur. This incursion resulted in a state of anarchy for the Golden Horde, inadvertently paving the way for Moscow's independence.

Despite the initial independence, Vasily's reign saw a return to submission to the Horde in fourteen twelve, highlighting the complexities and challenges of his rule.
