Vasily II of Moscow

Vasily II Vasilyevich, known as the Blind or the Dark, was born on 10 March 1415 and ascended to the Grand Prince of Moscow in 1425. His reign was marked by significant challenges, including a fierce power struggle with his uncle, Yuri of Zvenigorod, which led to a tumultuous period where Moscow changed hands multiple times.

In a dramatic turn of events, Vasily was captured and blinded by his cousin, Dmitry Shemyaka, in 1446. Despite this grave setback, he ultimately emerged victorious, largely due to the support of the populace who rallied behind him. His resilience in the face of adversity solidified his position as a prominent leader.

As his health declined and his disability became more pronounced, Vasily II made a pivotal decision to appoint his son, Ivan III, as co-ruler. This strategic move not only ensured a smooth transition of power but also laid the groundwork for the future of the Moscow principality.
