Al-Khayzuran

Al-Khayzuran, born in the year 701, was a remarkable figure in Islamic history, known for her profound influence as a poet, writer, ruler, and politician. As the wife of the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mahdi and the mother of Caliphs Al-Hadi and Harun al-Rashid, she wielded significant power from the year 775 until her death in 789. Her role transcended traditional boundaries, making her the first woman in Islamic history to exercise de facto rule and to have gold coins minted in her name.

During her husband's reign, Al-Khayzuran was a prominent presence at court, where her political acumen was highly regarded. The caliph often sought her counsel before making decisions, highlighting her substantial influence over state affairs. She established her own bureaucracy and court, where she accepted petitions and commanded authority, a groundbreaking achievement for women of her time.

Al-Khayzuran's wealth was immense, derived from extensive trade relations with various countries, independent of the state treasury. While Al-Mahdi indulged in leisure activities, she adeptly managed the caliphate from her residence, orchestrating meetings and maintaining control over government affairs. Following Al-Mahdi's untimely death, she skillfully navigated the political landscape to secure her son Al-Hadi's position as caliph, although their relationship soured, leading to his demise.

Ultimately, Al-Khayzuran played a pivotal role in elevating Harun al-Rashid to power. Unlike his brother, Harun recognized his mother's authority and relied on her guidance, solidifying her legacy as one of the most powerful women of her era.
