Arnulf of Carinthia

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Arnulf of Carinthia

Arnulf of Carinthia, born in the year eight hundred fifty, emerged as a significant figure in the Carolingian dynasty. Initially serving as the Duke of Carinthia, he orchestrated a coup against his uncle, Emperor Charles the Fat, and ascended to the throne as the King of East Francia in late eight hundred eighty-seven. His reign marked a pivotal moment in the power dynamics of medieval Europe.

In addition to his role in East Francia, Arnulf sought to extend his influence over Lotharingia and aimed to impose suzerainty over West Francia, Burgundy, and Italy. His ambitions led him to invade Italy in eight hundred ninety-four, where he successfully captured the city of Pavia. However, his rule was characterized by a series of swift returns to East Francia, reflecting the complexities of his reign.

Arnulf's most notable achievement came on the twenty-second of February in eight hundred ninety-six when he was crowned Emperor in Rome by Pope Formosus. This event solidified his status as a key player in the political landscape of the time, although his reign faced challenges from rivals such as Lambert of Italy and Berengar I of Italy.

Despite his efforts to maintain control, Arnulf's reign was relatively short-lived. He passed away on the eighth of December in eight hundred ninety-nine in Ratisbon, Bavaria. His death marked the end of the male line of the Carolingian dynasty's rule in Italy, leaving a significant legacy in the annals of European history.
