Ashot III of Armenia, known as Ashot III the Merciful, was a prominent king of the medieval kingdom of Bagratid Armenia, ruling from nine hundred fifty-two or nine hundred fifty-three to nine hundred seventy-seven. His reign marked a significant period in Armenian history, characterized by prosperity and cultural flourishing.

During his time as sovereign, Ashot III was recognized by foreign rulers as the Shahanshah, or king of kings, of Mets Hayk, which is often referred to as Greater Armenia. This title underscored his influence and the respect he commanded beyond his own borders.

One of Ashot III's notable achievements was the relocation of his royal seat to the city of Ani, where he oversaw its development into a thriving center of culture and governance.
