Canute Lavard

Canute Lavard, born on March twelfth, 1096, was a notable Danish prince who played a pivotal role in the history of Denmark and Schleswig. As the first Duke of Schleswig, he held a unique position as both a Danish and a German vassal, which laid the groundwork for the historical duality of Southern Jutland.

His life was tragically cut short when he was killed by his cousin Magnus the Strong, who viewed him as a rival for the Danish throne. This act of familial betrayal marked a significant moment in the power dynamics of the region.

In recognition of his contributions and legacy, Canute Lavard was canonized in the year one thousand one hundred seventy. He is remembered not only for his noble lineage but also as an ancestor of the Valdemarian kings, including his son, King Valdemar I of Denmark, and his grandson, King Valdemar II of Denmark.
