Chaim Herzog

Chaim Herzog, born on September seventeenth, nineteen eighteen, was a prominent Irish-Israeli figure whose multifaceted career spanned politics, law, and military service. He was born in Belfast and raised in Dublin, the son of Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog, who served as Ireland's Chief Rabbi. In nineteen thirty-five, Herzog immigrated to Mandatory Palestine, where he became actively involved in the Haganah during the Arab revolt from nineteen thirty-six to nineteen thirty-nine and later served in the British Army during World War II.

Following the establishment of the State of Israel in nineteen forty-eight, Herzog played a significant role in the Israel Defense Forces, participating in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He continued his military career until nineteen sixty-two, retiring with the rank of major-general. After his military service, he transitioned into the private sector, managing an industrial conglomerate and co-founding the Herzog, Fox & Ne'eman law firm, which grew to become one of Israel's largest legal practices.

Herzog's diplomatic career included a notable tenure as Israel's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from nineteen seventy-five to nineteen seventy-eight. During this time, he famously denounced the UN General Assembly Resolution 3379, which labeled Zionism as racism, by symbolically tearing it up before the assembly. His political journey began in the nineteen eighty-one elections when he secured a Knesset seat as a member of the Alignment party.

In March nineteen eighty-three, Herzog was elected President of Israel, a largely ceremonial position, and he served two consecutive five-year terms until his retirement in nineteen ninety-three. He passed away four years later and was laid to rest on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. His legacy continues through his son, Isaac Herzog, who served as the leader of the Israeli Labor Party and is the current President of Israel, marking a historic father-son duo in the nation's presidential history.
