Chlothar II

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Chlothar II

Chlothar II, born in five hundred eighty-four, was a prominent monarch of the Franks, ruling over Neustria from five hundred eighty-four to six hundred twenty-nine, and later extending his reign to Burgundy and Austrasia. As the son of Chilperic I and Fredegund, he ascended to the throne as an infant, under the regency of his mother, who maintained a precarious alliance with his uncle, King Guntram of Burgundy, until his death in five hundred ninety-two.

Upon the passing of his mother in five hundred ninety-seven, Chlothar took control of a realm that, despite its wealth, was one of the smaller territories within Francia. His reign was marked by a fierce continuation of the feud with Queen Brunhilda, culminating in her brutal execution by dismemberment in six hundred thirteen. This victory allowed Chlothar to consolidate his power and unite Francia under his rule, following a series of territorial expansions that echoed the practices of his father.

Chlothar's reign, while lengthy by the standards of his time, was characterized by the gradual decline of royal authority in the face of rising influence from the French nobility and the church. The Edict of Paris in six hundred fourteen, which addressed various administrative matters, has been subject to diverse interpretations by historians. In six hundred seventeen, he made a significant change by granting the mayor of the Palace a lifetime position, marking a pivotal shift in governance that would eventually lead to the rise of the office under Pepin the Short in seven hundred fifty-one.

Notably, Chlothar II practiced monogamy, a rarity among Merovingian kings, although he had three wives due to early deaths. His reign was generally marked by a cooperative relationship with the church, and aside from the execution of Brunhilda, it lacked the notorious acts of violence that characterized some of his predecessors.
