Dagobert I

Dagobert I, born in the year six hundred eleven, was a prominent monarch of the Franks, known for his significant reign during a transformative period in Frankish history. He ruled over Austrasia from six hundred twenty-three to six hundred thirty-four and later expanded his dominion to include Neustria and Burgundy from six hundred twenty-nine until his death in six hundred thirty-nine.

Often regarded as the last Merovingian king to exercise genuine royal authority, Dagobert's reign marked a pivotal moment when the power dynamics shifted, leading to the rise of the Mayor of the Palace as the principal political and military leader. His rule was characterized by efforts to consolidate power and maintain the integrity of the Frankish kingdom amidst growing challenges.

Dagobert I holds the distinction of being the first Frankish king to be interred in the royal tombs at the Basilica of Saint-Denis, a site that would become a significant burial place for French royalty.
