Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Denis of Portugal

Denis of Portugal, known as the Poet King (Rei Poeta), was born on October ninth, twelve sixty-one. He ascended to the throne in twelve seventy-nine, following the reign of his father, Afonso III of Portugal. As the eldest son of Afonso III and Beatrice of Castile, Denis was also the grandson of Afonso II of Portugal. His reign lasted for over forty-six years, during which he made significant contributions to the cultural and agricultural landscape of Portugal.

Married to Elizabeth of Aragon, who would later be canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church, Denis was not only a monarch but also a poet, composer, writer, farmer, politician, and translator. His literary works played a crucial role in the evolution of the Portuguese language, establishing it as a respected medium for artistic expression.

Denis was dedicated to the economic reorganization of his country, focusing particularly on agriculture. He initiated the planting of a vast pine forest near Leiria, a project aimed at preventing soil degradation and providing essential materials for the construction of royal ships. This forest, which still stands today, is a testament to his forward-thinking approach to environmental stewardship.
