Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Edmund Ironside

Edmund Ironside, born between the years of nine hundred ninety and nine hundred ninety-three, was a significant figure in English history, serving as King of the English for a brief but impactful period from 23 April to 30 November 1016. He was the son of King Æthelred the Unready and is noted for his valiant efforts against the Danish invasion led by Cnut.

Little is documented about Edmund's early life prior to the year 1015, but he is believed to have been close to his brother Æthelstan. Following Æthelstan's death in June 1014, Edmund inherited valuable connections and estates in the Danelaw, as well as the sword of Offa. His early political maneuvers included a revolt against King Æthelred after the execution of his allies, which led to his illegal marriage to Sigeferth's widow and his occupation of the Five Boroughs.

Edmund's reign was marked by a fierce struggle against Cnut, who invaded in the summer of 1015. Despite attempts to rally support from his father and Eadric Streona, these efforts faltered due to mistrust. After claiming the throne following Æthelred's death, Edmund engaged in several battles against Cnut, achieving some military successes but ultimately facing defeat at the Battle of Assandun.

After a series of conflicts, Edmund was forced to partition the kingdom at Alney, retaining control of Wessex while conceding the rest to Cnut. His reign lasted for two hundred twenty-two days, ending with his death on 30 November 1016. Following his demise, Cnut consolidated power, leading to the exile or execution of Edmund's family and supporters. Despite the brevity of his rule, Edmund Ironside is remembered as a brave and capable king who fought valiantly for his kingdom.
