Ermengard of Italy

Ermengard of Italy, a prominent figure in the late ninth century, was born as the second and only surviving child of Emperor Louis II. Her early life was marked by a significant betrothal to Constantine, the junior Byzantine emperor, although the details surrounding the marriage remain a topic of debate among historians.

In the year eight hundred seventy-one, Ermengard and her family faced a perilous situation when they were taken hostage by Adelchis of Benevento. Fortunately, they were later freed, allowing Ermengard to continue her journey through a tumultuous period in history.

In eight hundred seventy-six, she married Boso, a nobleman with ties to the illustrious Carolingian dynasty. Following Boso's ascension to the throne of Provence in eight hundred seventy-nine, Ermengard became queen, embracing her role with grace and determination.

After the death of her husband in eight hundred eighty-seven, Ermengard took on the mantle of regent, skillfully ruling the kingdom during the minority of their son, Louis the Blind. Her leadership during this critical time solidified her legacy as a formidable figure in the annals of history.
