Ermengarde of Tours

Ermengarde of Tours, born in the year eight hundred and four, was a prominent figure in the Carolingian dynasty, serving as the Empress consort and queen of Italy. She was the daughter of Hugh of Tours and Ava of Morvois, and her lineage positioned her within the influential circles of her time.

In October of eight hundred and twenty-one, Ermengarde entered into a significant union with Lothair I, the Carolingian Emperor of the Franks. Their marriage took place in Thionville, marking the beginning of a partnership that would yield several notable offspring, including Louis II of Italy and Lothair II.

Beyond her role as a consort, Ermengarde made a lasting impact through her charitable endeavors. She utilized her bridal gift to establish the abbey of Erstein in the Elsass, where she would later be interred. This act of devotion not only reflected her piety but also her commitment to the spiritual and cultural development of her realm.

Ermengarde's legacy is further enriched by her children, who continued to shape the political landscape of their time. Among them were Helletrud, who married Count Berengar, and Bertha, who became Abbess of Avenay. Tragically, one of her daughters, known later as Ermengarde, was kidnapped in eight hundred and forty-six, a testament to the turbulent times in which they lived.

Ermengarde passed away in the year eight hundred and fifty-one, leaving behind a legacy intertwined with the history of the Carolingian Empire and its enduring influence on European nobility.
