Francis I Rákóczi

Francis I Rákóczi, born on February 24, 1645, was a prominent Hungarian aristocrat and politician, known for his role as the elected prince of Transylvania and as the father of the national hero Francis Rákóczi II. He was the son of George Rákóczi II and Sophia Báthory, and his political journey began early when he was elected prince by the Transylvanian Diet in 1652, while his father was still alive.

However, the political landscape shifted dramatically in 1660 when the Ottoman Empire deposed his father, barring any Rákóczi from ascending the Transylvanian throne. This turn of events forced Francis to retreat to his estates in Royal Hungary, where he navigated the complexities of his family's legacy.

Raised in a Calvinist family, Francis's religious affiliations changed when his mother returned to Catholicism after his father's death. Influenced by her, he converted to Catholicism, which helped him gain favor with the Catholic Habsburg Court. In 1664, he was elevated to the rank of count, marking a significant step in his political career.

In 1666, Francis married Jelena Zrinska, a Croatian countess, and became involved in the Wesselényi conspiracy, which aimed to challenge Habsburg authority. As the conspiracy's leader, he initiated an armed uprising in Upper Hungary. Unfortunately, due to disorganization and a lack of unity among the conspirators, the revolt was swiftly suppressed by Austrian forces. When he learned of the capture of Petar Zrinski, his father-in-law, Francis sought mercy, ultimately securing a pardon through his mother's intervention and a ransom of three hundred thousand forints.
