Frederick V of Denmark

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Frederick V of Denmark

Frederick V of Denmark, born on March thirty-first, seventeen twenty-three, ascended to the throne as King of Denmark and Norway and Duke of Schleswig-Holstein on August sixth, seventeen forty-six. He was a member of the House of Oldenburg, the son of Christian VI of Denmark and Sophie Magdalene of Brandenburg-Kulmbach.

While Frederick's personal influence was somewhat limited, his reign was notable for the flourishing of commerce and trade, as well as advancements in art and science. Unlike his devoutly Pietist parents, Frederick developed a hedonistic lifestyle. As regent, he participated in government affairs by attending council meetings, although his struggles with alcoholism often overshadowed his rule.

Most of Frederick's reign was characterized by the capable ministers who guided the kingdom, influenced by the progressive ideas of the Age of Enlightenment. These ministers facilitated significant advancements in commerce and the burgeoning industry while skillfully steering Denmark-Norway away from the European conflicts of the time.

Although Frederick V himself showed little interest in cultural matters, his first wife was passionate about the arts. Under her influence, the public entertainment and freedom of expression that had been suppressed during his father's reign were reinstated, marking a vibrant cultural revival during his time on the throne.
