Gavin Newsom, born on October tenth, nineteen sixty-seven, is a prominent American politician and businessman currently serving as the 40th governor of California since 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously held the position of the 49th lieutenant governor of California from 2011 to 2019 and was the 42nd mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.
Raised in San Francisco, Newsom graduated from Santa Clara University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in political science. He ventured into the business world by founding the boutique winery PlumpJack Group in Oakville, California, with the support of billionaire heir Gordon Getty. Under his leadership, the company expanded to manage twenty-three businesses, including wineries, restaurants, and hotels.
Newsom's political journey began in 1996 when he was appointed to the Parking and Traffic Commission by San Francisco mayor Willie Brown. The following year, he filled a vacancy on the Board of Supervisors, where he was first elected in 1998. His tenure as mayor of San Francisco began in 2003, and he was reelected in 2007. In 2010, he was elected lieutenant governor and secured reelection in 2014.
As lieutenant governor, Newsom hosted The Gavin Newsom Show from 2012 to 2013 and authored the book Citizenville in 2013, which discusses leveraging digital tools for democratic engagement. He was elected governor of California in 2018 and reelected in 2022, focusing on critical issues such as infrastructure, housing, climate change, gun control, and LGBTQ rights.
Despite facing criticism for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to an unsuccessful recall effort in 2021, Newsom continued to engage with the public through various platforms. In 2025, he launched a podcast titled This Is Gavin Newsom, featuring guests from diverse political backgrounds. That same year, he oversaw the passage of California Proposition 50, known as the Election Rigging Response Act, aimed at amending the State Constitution.
