Goiswintha, born in the year five hundred and twenty, was a prominent Visigothic queen consort of Hispania and Septimania. She was married to two influential kings, Athanagild and Liuvigild, during a transformative period for the Visigothic Kingdom in the late sixth century. This era was marked by significant political and religious shifts, as the kingdom, situated on the Iberian Peninsula, began to blend Roman traditions with the diverse religious practices of its populace, which was predominantly Catholic, while the ruling elite adhered to Arian Christianity.

As queen, Goiswintha emerged as a pivotal figure in the ongoing religious conflicts between Arians and Catholics. Her staunch resistance to the Catholic conversion of her family members and her active involvement in political affairs underscored the religious transformations of her time. Her fervent advocacy for Arianism not only shaped the religious landscape of her kingdom but also incited a major rebellion led by her stepson, Hermenegild.

Goiswintha's political maneuvers did not end there; she was also implicated in a conspiracy against her other stepson, Reccared, which ultimately led to her demise. These tumultuous events marked a significant turning point in the religious wars between Arians and Nicene Christianity, culminating in the decline of Arian influence in the region.

Historians have long debated the role of the Visigoths in the fall of Rome, with some, like Peter Heather, asserting that the barbarians were integral to this historical shift.
