Gojong of Goryeo, born Wang Cheol on February third, one thousand one hundred ninety-two, ascended to the throne as the twenty-third king of the Goryeo dynasty in the year twelve thirteen. His reign, which lasted until twelve fifty-nine, was characterized by significant challenges, particularly the relentless incursions of the Mongol Empire, which sought to dominate the Korean peninsula.
Throughout his rule, Gojong faced the formidable task of defending his kingdom against the Mongol forces. The conflict was prolonged and tumultuous, ultimately culminating in a peace settlement in the year twelve fifty-nine. This period of warfare not only tested Gojong's leadership but also shaped the future of Goryeo.
Despite Gojong's royal status, actual power during his reign was largely held by the Choe family, a group of military dictators who exerted considerable influence over the kingdom's affairs. This dynamic created a complex political landscape, where Gojong's authority was often overshadowed by the military elite.
