Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia

Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia, born on October fourth, eighteen sixty-one, was a notable figure in the Russian aristocracy. He was the son of Grand Duke Michael Nicolaievich and the grandson of Tsar Nicholas I. Raised in the picturesque Caucasus region, he spent his formative years there until eighteen eighty-one, receiving a private education in line with Romanov traditions.

Following the expectations of his lineage, Michael pursued a military career, serving valiantly in the Russo-Turkish War of eighteen seventy-seven. His dedication and service led him to the rank of Colonel, and he held the esteemed position of adjutant at the Imperial court. However, his life took a dramatic turn in eighteen ninety-one when he entered into a morganatic marriage with Countess Sophie von Merenberg, a union that would ultimately lead to his downfall.

Due to the lack of imperial consent for his marriage, Emperor Alexander III stripped him of his military titles and exiled him and his wife from the Russian Empire. The couple found refuge in various locations, including Wiesbaden, Nassau, and Cannes, before settling permanently in England in nineteen hundred. In England, Michael became a prominent figure in British society, with his daughters marrying into the aristocracy, including one who wed a great-grandson of Queen Victoria.

Despite his initial success, the fall of the Russian monarchy in nineteen eighteen led to the loss of his fortune. Tragically, three of his brothers were killed by the Bolsheviks, but Michael managed to escape the turmoil of the Russian Revolution due to his residence abroad. In his later years, he lived modestly, relying on the financial support of his son-in-law, Sir Harold Wernher.
