Guru Tegh Bahadur

Guru Tegh Bahadur, born on April first, sixteen twenty-one in Amritsar, Punjab, India, was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh guru. He became the ninth of ten gurus who played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Sikh religion. Leading the Sikhs from sixteen sixty-five until his martyrdom in sixteen seventy-five, he is remembered as a principled and fearless warrior, a learned spiritual scholar, and a poet.

As a significant figure in Sikhism, Guru Tegh Bahadur contributed one hundred and fifteen hymns to the Guru Granth Sahib, the central religious scripture of Sikhism. His legacy includes the founding of Anandpur Sahib in sixteen sixty-four, a city that became a center of Sikh culture and spirituality.

Guru Tegh Bahadur's life came to a tragic end when he was executed on the orders of Aurangzeb, the sixth Mughal emperor, in Delhi, India. The sites of his execution and cremation are commemorated by the Sikh holy premises Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib and Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib. His martyrdom is observed annually on November twenty-fourth, known as Shaheedi Divas.

The reasons behind the conflict between Guru Tegh Bahadur and Aurangzeb remain a subject of historical debate. Sikh narratives emphasize the Guru's defense of the rights and freedoms of non-Muslims against Aurangzeb's oppressive policies, while Mughal accounts suggest that the Guru was involved in tax collection from non-Muslims in Punjab. Additionally, family dynamics, including pretenders to the guruship, contributed to the tensions that led to the Guru's execution.
