Henry VII of England

Henry VII of England, born on 28 January 1457, emerged as a pivotal figure in English history. Known as Henry Tudor, he ascended to the throne on 22 August 1485 after a decisive victory at the Battle of Bosworth Field, marking the end of the Wars of the Roses. As the first monarch of the House of Tudor, he brought stability to a nation ravaged by civil strife.

The son of Edmund Tudor, 1st Earl of Richmond, and Lady Margaret Beaufort, Henry's lineage connected him to the Lancastrian branch of the Plantagenets. His father passed away shortly before his birth, leaving Henry to be raised by his uncle Jasper Tudor and William Herbert. His early life was marked by the tumult of civil wars, and after the Yorkist king Edward IV regained the throne in 1471, Henry spent fourteen years in exile in Brittany.

Henry's reign, lasting nearly twenty-four years, was characterized by significant administrative and economic reforms. He focused on enhancing the English wool industry and implemented new taxes to stabilize the government’s finances. His prudent approach to spending and revenue generation laid the groundwork for a more prosperous England.

In a strategic move to solidify his claim to the throne, Henry married Elizabeth of York, the daughter of Edward IV. This union not only united the warring factions but also symbolized the restoration of peace. Following his death on 21 April 1509, Henry was succeeded by his son, Henry VIII, leaving behind a legacy of restored power and stability for the English monarchy.
