Elizabeth of York

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Elizabeth of York

Elizabeth of York, born on February eleventh, fourteen sixty-six, was a pivotal figure in English history as the Queen of England from her marriage to King Henry VII on January eighteenth, fourteen eighty-six until her death in fifteen hundred three. She was the daughter of King Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville, and her marriage followed Henry's victory at the Battle of Bosworth Field, which effectively ended the Wars of the Roses.

Her early life was marked by tragedy, as her younger brothers, known as the 'Princes in the Tower', mysteriously vanished from the Tower of London shortly after their uncle, Richard III, seized the throne in fourteen eighty-three. Despite the declaration of her parents' marriage as invalid by the 1484 Act of Parliament, Elizabeth and her sisters returned to court under Richard III after a ten-month sanctuary in Westminster Abbey. Rumors circulated that Richard intended to marry her, but the eventual triumph of the Lancastrian faction brought a new alliance with Henry Tudor, who recognized the significance of Yorkist support and promised to marry Elizabeth.

Once she ascended to the throne, Elizabeth's role in politics diminished, yet her marriage to Henry VII appeared to be both successful and fulfilling. The couple faced personal tragedies, including the death of their eldest son, Arthur, Prince of Wales, at the tender age of fifteen in fifteen hundred two, along with the loss of three other children at a young age. However, their second son would later become King Henry VIII, while their daughters, Margaret and Mary, would marry into the royal families of Scotland and France, respectively.
