Ivan III of Russia

Ivan III Vasilyevich, known as Ivan the Great, was born on January 22, 1440, and became the Grand Prince of Moscow and all Russia in 1462. His reign lasted until his death in 1505, marking a significant period in Russian history. Before officially ascending the throne, Ivan served as co-ruler and regent for his blind father, Vasily II, showcasing his early leadership capabilities.

During his rule, Ivan III expanded the territory of his state through various means, including conquest, purchase, and inheritance. He skillfully seized lands from his dynastic relatives, laying the groundwork for a centralized Russian state. His efforts also included the renovation of the Moscow Kremlin and the introduction of a new legal code, which helped to modernize governance in Russia.

One of Ivan's most notable achievements was ending the dominance of the Tatars over Russia. His decisive victory over the Great Horde in 1480 restored independence to the region, solidifying his legacy as a formidable leader. Additionally, Ivan began using the title of tsar, a designation that would later be recognized by the Habsburgs, although he preferred the title of grand prince within his own realm.

Through his marriage to Sophia Palaiologina, Ivan III adopted the double-headed eagle as Russia's coat of arms and embraced the concept of Moscow as the third Rome. His reign, lasting forty-three years, stands as the second-longest in Russian history, surpassed only by that of his grandson, Ivan IV.
