Jean-Claude Duvalier

Jean-Claude Duvalier, born on July 3, 1951, was a prominent Haitian politician who rose to power amid a backdrop of widespread poverty in his nation, which was the most severe in the Western Hemisphere. His presidency began with improved relations with the United States, which later soured during the Carter administration but were restored under Ronald Reagan, largely due to Duvalier's staunch anti-communist policies.

In 1985, growing discontent led to a rebellion against his regime, culminating in Duvalier's flight to France in 1986 aboard a U.S. Air Force plane. For two decades, he lived in self-imposed exile until his unexpected return to Haiti on January 16, 2011. However, his return was short-lived as he was arrested the following day, facing serious allegations of embezzlement.

On January 18, 2011, Duvalier was formally charged with corruption, and by February 28, 2013, he pleaded not guilty to accusations of corruption and human rights abuses. His legacy is marred by the significant amount of money embezzled during his rule, which was identified as the sixth largest by a sitting head of government between 1984 and 2004.

Jean-Claude Duvalier's life came to an end on October 4, 2014, when he suffered a heart attack at the age of sixty-three. His complex legacy continues to evoke strong reactions in Haiti and beyond, reflecting the tumultuous history of his leadership.
