John I of Castile

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of John I of Castile

John I of Castile, born on August twenty-fourth, thirteen fifty-eight, was a prominent warrior and politician who reigned as King of Castile and León from thirteen seventy-nine until his untimely death in thirteen ninety.

The son of Henry II and Juana Manuel of Castile, John ascended to the throne in a period marked by political ambition and conflict. In thirteen eighty-three, he married Beatrice, the daughter of King Ferdinand I of Portugal, a union that aimed to strengthen his claim to the Portuguese crown.

However, the death of Ferdinand that same year plunged John into the tumultuous 1383–1385 Crisis, as he sought to assert his influence over Portugal. His forces encountered fierce resistance from factions supporting John of Aviz, leading to the pivotal Battle of Aljubarrota in thirteen eighty-five, where John faced a significant defeat that ultimately secured Portugal's independence.

In a strategic move to fortify Castile, John arranged the marriage of his son Henry to the daughter of John of Gaunt, thereby linking the Trastámara and Plantagenet dynasties. Tragically, John's reign came to an abrupt end in thirteen ninety when he fell from his horse during a fantasia performance, resulting in a minority rule under his son, Henry III.
