John II of France

John II of France, born on April twenty-sixth, 1319, was a sovereign who faced immense challenges during his reign. His rule was marked by the tumultuous backdrop of the Hundred Years' War, where English aggression led to significant military defeats for France, notably the catastrophic Battle of Poitiers in 1356, which resulted in John's capture.

While John languished as a prisoner in London, his son Charles took on the mantle of regent. Charles adeptly navigated through several rebellions, ultimately securing his father's release through the Treaty of Brétigny in 1360. This treaty, however, came at a steep cost, as France lost numerous territories and was burdened with an enormous ransom.

Upon his return to France, John sought to stabilize the economy by introducing the franc as a new currency. He also attempted to eliminate the free companies that plagued the land by sending them on a crusade, although this plan was thwarted by the untimely death of Pope Innocent VI just before their meeting in Avignon.

In a twist of fate, when John learned that his son Louis had escaped captivity, he made the noble decision to return to England voluntarily. This act of sacrifice ultimately led to his death in 1364. Following his passing, he was succeeded by his eldest son, Charles V, who would continue the legacy of their family amidst the ongoing strife.
