Judit Polgár

Judit Polgár, born on July 23, 1976, is a Hungarian chess grandmaster who has made an indelible mark on the world of chess. Widely regarded as the strongest female chess player of all time, she holds the unique distinction of being the only woman to have ever been ranked in the world top ten. Her peak rating of two thousand seven hundred thirty-five is a record that remains unmatched by any female player.

A chess prodigy, Polgár broke into the FIDE top one hundred rating list at the tender age of twelve, achieving a remarkable rank of fifty-five in January 1989. By the age of fifteen years and four months, she became the youngest player to earn the title of Grandmaster, surpassing a record previously held by the legendary Bobby Fischer. This achievement came in the same year that her older sister Sofia became the third female Grandmaster.

Throughout her illustrious career, Polgár has won or shared first place in numerous prestigious tournaments, including Hastings in nineteen ninety-three, Madrid in nineteen ninety-four, and the U.S. Open in nineteen ninety-eight. Notably, she is the only woman to have defeated a reigning world number one player and has bested eleven current or former world champions in various formats of chess.

After announcing her retirement from competitive chess on August 13, 2014, Polgár transitioned to coaching, becoming the captain and head coach of the Hungarian national men's team in June 2015. Her contributions to chess have been recognized with numerous accolades, including Hungary's highest decoration, the Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Stephen of Hungary, awarded in August 2015, and her induction into the World Chess Hall of Fame in 2021.

In September 2024, she was honored with the FIDE 100 Award as the best female player, further solidifying her legacy in the chess world.
