Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Khumarawayh ibn Ahmad ibn Tulun

Khumarawayh ibn Ahmad ibn Tulun, born in eight hundred sixty-four, was a prominent military leader and ruler of Egypt from eight hundred eighty-four until eight hundred ninety-six. As the son of Ahmad ibn Tulun, the founder of the Tulunid dynasty, Khumarawayh was groomed for leadership from an early age. Upon his father's death in May of eight hundred eighty-four, he ascended to the throne, facing immediate challenges to his authority.

In eight hundred eighty-six, after successfully quelling an attempt to unseat him, Khumarawayh secured recognition from the Abbasid Caliphate as the hereditary governor of Egypt and Syria. This recognition was further solidified in eight hundred ninety-three when he renewed the agreement with the Abbasid Caliph al-Mu'tadid, which included a strategic marriage alliance with his daughter Qatr al-Nada.

At the zenith of his reign, Khumarawayh's influence stretched from the Byzantine frontier in Cilicia to Nubia. His rule was characterized by lavish expenditures on opulent displays of wealth, the construction of grand palaces, and the patronage of artists and poets. However, this extravagant lifestyle, coupled with the necessity of maintaining a large professional army through generous gifts, ultimately drained the treasury by the end of his reign.

Khumarawayh's life came to a tragic end in eight hundred ninety-six when he was murdered by a palace servant. He was succeeded by his son Jaysh, who was quickly deposed in favor of another son, Harun ibn Khumarawayh. Following his death, the Tulunid state entered a tumultuous period that would lead to its reconquest by the Abbasids in nine hundred four to nine hundred five.
