Lee Shau-kee, born on February 20, 1928, was a prominent Hong Kong entrepreneur, banker, and businessperson. Renowned as a business magnate, he made his mark as a real estate tycoon and the majority owner of Henderson Land Development, a diversified property conglomerate with interests spanning real estate, hotels, restaurants, and internet services both in Hong Kong and internationally.
In 2019, at the age of ninety-one, Lee transitioned from his roles as chairman and managing director of Henderson Land Development, passing the leadership to his sons, Peter and Martin Lee. Despite stepping down from these key positions, he continued to serve as an executive director, maintaining a significant influence within the company.
At the time of his passing, Lee's personal wealth was estimated by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index to be twenty-three point two billion US dollars, positioning him as the second wealthiest individual in Hong Kong, following Li Ka-shing, and the eighty-ninth richest person globally. Notably, prior to the handover of Hong Kong in 1997, he was recognized as the fourth-richest person in the world.
