Leonor Teles

Leonor Teles, born in the year thirteen fifty, was a significant figure in Portuguese history, serving as queen consort through her marriage to King Ferdinand I. Her reign was marked by political turmoil and personal scandal, as she navigated the complexities of royal life and the expectations placed upon her.

As regent of Portugal, Leonor played a pivotal role during the succession crisis of thirteen eighty-three to thirteen eighty-five. This tumultuous period saw her actively involved alongside her brothers and her daughter Beatrice, as they faced the formidable challenge posed by her son-in-law, King John I of Castile. The conflict culminated in the historic Battle of Aljubarrota, where the Portuguese forces achieved a decisive victory.

Despite her contributions to the kingdom, Leonor's legacy is marred by controversy. Her subjects labeled her as 'the Treacherous' (a Aleivosa), a title reflecting their disdain for her alleged adultery and perceived betrayal of her homeland. Historian Alexandre Herculano notably compared her to 'the Portuguese Lucrezia Borgia,' highlighting the complexities of her character and the perceptions of her actions.
