Malcolm III of Scotland

Malcolm III of Scotland, known as Canmore, which translates to 'big head' in Scottish Gaelic, reigned as King of Alba from the year one thousand fifty-eight until his death in one thousand ninety-three. His reign lasted an impressive thirty-five years, marking a significant period that preceded the Scoto-Norman age.

During his rule, Malcolm's kingdom did not encompass the entirety of modern Scotland. The northern territories, including many islands and lands beyond the River Oykel, remained under Scandinavian control. Additionally, the regions south of the Firth of Forth were home to various independent or semi-independent realms, such as the kingdom of Strathclyde and Bamburgh, leaving the extent of Scottish power during Malcolm's accession somewhat ambiguous.

Malcolm III was a formidable leader, orchestrating at least five invasions into English territory throughout his reign. One of his most notable achievements was solidifying the lineage that would govern Scotland until the late thirteenth century. His legacy is further immortalized in literature, as he is depicted as a major character in William Shakespeare's renowned play, Macbeth.

In his personal life, Malcolm's second wife, Margaret, was later canonized as a saint in the thirteenth century, adding a spiritual dimension to his legacy.
