Maria de Luna

Maria de Luna, born in 1353, was a remarkable figure in the history of Aragon, serving as queen consort alongside her husband, King Martin I, from 1396 until her death in 1406. As the daughter of Lope, the 1st Count of Luna, and Brianda d’Agout, she was raised in an aristocratic environment that prepared her for a life of influence and leadership.

Her marriage to Martin was arranged during her childhood, and she was educated at the court of Queen Eleanor of Sicily, Martin's mother. The couple wed in Barcelona on June thirteenth, 1372, and upon Martin's ascension to the throne, Maria took on the role of regent while he managed affairs in Sicily, demonstrating her capability and political acumen.

Maria was not just a supportive spouse; she was a politically active queen who wielded significant influence over Aragon's policies and societal matters. Her efforts to support the impoverished, manage taxation, and foster peace among noble houses showcased her commitment to justice and mercy. She even engaged with Antipope Benedict XIII to advocate for the abolition of unjust laws.

Described as wise and just, Maria de Luna was deeply interested in music and literature, yet she remained unimpressed by extravagance. Her legacy as a ruler is marked by her compassion and her ability to govern effectively, often regarded as a more skilled leader than her husband.
