Maria II of Portugal

Maria II of Portugal, affectionately known as "the Educator" and "the Good Mother," was born on April fourth, eighteen nineteen, in Rio de Janeiro during the reign of her grandfather, King Dom João VI. As the first child of the Duke and Duchess of Braganza, who later became Emperor Dom Pedro I and Empress Dona Maria Leopoldina of Brazil, Maria's royal lineage was firmly established from birth. In eighteen twenty-six, her father ascended to the Portuguese throne but soon abdicated in favor of his young daughter, who was only seven years old at the time.

During her first reign from eighteen twenty-six to eighteen twenty-eight, Maria remained in Brazil, with her aunt Dona Isabel Maria serving as regent in Portugal. However, the political landscape shifted dramatically when her uncle Miguel arrived and deposed her, declaring himself king. This act ignited the Liberal Wars over royal succession, forcing Maria to remain outside Portugal until she learned of her deposition while in Gibraltar. She subsequently returned to Brazil, where her father led a military expedition to support her claim.

Maria finally set foot in Portugal in eighteen thirty-three, following the occupation of Lisbon by forces loyal to her. By eighteen thirty-four, Miguel was compelled to abdicate, restoring Maria as the undisputed queen. Her second reign was fraught with political challenges, and in January eighteen thirty-five, she married Auguste, Duke of Leuchtenberg, who tragically passed away shortly after their wedding. In April eighteen thirty-six, she remarried Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha-Kohary, who was later proclaimed King Dom Fernando II.

Maria's reign was marked by personal trials, including difficult pregnancies. Sadly, she died in childbirth in eighteen fifty-three at the young age of thirty-four. Her legacy continued through her eldest son, Dom Pedro V, who succeeded her as king, ensuring that her impact on Portuguese history would endure.
