Nargis Dutt, born Fatima Rashid on June first, nineteen twenty-nine, was a luminary in Indian cinema and a dedicated politician. Known mononymously as Nargis, she is celebrated as one of the greatest actresses in the history of Hindi films. Her career, which spanned three decades, showcased her ability to portray sophisticated and independent women across various genres, from screwball comedies to poignant dramas.

Making her screen debut at the tender age of six in Talash-E-Haq, Nargis's acting journey truly began with Tamanna in nineteen forty-two. She gained prominence with her leading role in Taqdeer, followed by a breakthrough performance in the romance film Andaz and the musical Barsaat, both released in nineteen forty-nine. Her collaboration with Raj Kapoor in the crime drama Awaara in nineteen fifty-one marked a significant milestone, establishing her as a major star.

Throughout the fifties and sixties, Nargis continued to captivate audiences with memorable performances in films like Shree 420 and Chori Chori. Her role in Mehboob Khan's Mother India, released in nineteen fifty-seven, not only became the highest-grossing film in India at that time but also earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Nargis's final film, Raat Aur Din, released in nineteen sixty-seven, garnered her the inaugural National Film Award for Best Actress.

In nineteen fifty-eight, Nargis married her Mother India co-star Sunil Dutt, and together they had three children, including actor Sanjay Dutt. Beyond her film career, she was a passionate social worker, becoming the first patron of The Spastic Society of India in the early seventies. Her contributions to society were recognized with a Rajya Sabha nomination in nineteen eighty.

Nargis passed away on May third, nineteen eighty-one, due to pancreatic cancer, just days before her son Sanjay's film debut. In her memory, the Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Foundation was established by her husband, and the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration was created to honor her legacy. In two thousand eleven, Rediff.com named her the greatest Indian actress of all time.
